Match Preview: Herston Hatchets vs QUT

“Trial by Fire”
words by Tom K

The tension has been palpable around the Herston Hatchets clubroom leading up to their season opener this Friday. Months of drills and Sunday kick-arounds will culminate in a clash with QUT, and coach Simon B couldn’t be happier with their preparation in the lead-up. We caught up with the tactical mind behind the Hatchets as he was polishing his boots, wearing his full match kit and muttering about training attendance to himself.

“The boys have been combining really positively in the formation we’re playing tomorrow. We’re using a 3-4-1-2 formation, with drop wing defenders and a holding striker,” he said, in what has become his signature oblivious overestimation of the Hatchets’ sophistication.

Team News

It hasn’t all been good news for the Hatchets, however. Veteran defender and captain Steven C has been ruled out of the game with a pulled back. Team doctors are unsure of the recovery time, but have said that it may be weeks before he ‘hardens the fuck up’. Promising new signing for the team Steve L is still recovering from knee surgery, and will also miss out.

Player to Watch – Tom H

The Smiling Assassin will be the lynchpin around which the Hatchets play on Friday. Look for him up front of the queue looking to play beers back to his team mates after the game.

Last Time They Met

These teams last played in the semi-final of last season. It was a disappointing night for the Hatchets, as QUT won 2-1 in extra time thanks to a ‘dubious’ penalty decision. The young doctors will be looking to make amends this week, and are sure to come out firing.

Tom’s Top Tip

UniBet is offering a generous $13.11 for Trey M to be the first to score. He shoots like a nasty sciatica and at that price he’s a must bet. Less adventurous punters can take the safe money for ‘The Raging Bull’ Nick  R to receive a yellow card at $1.33.

Match Prediction

Hatchets 3-0 – the boys from Herston are the better side, and will show their quality on the night.

Thanks to Tom K for the preview. Look out for Tom slaloming down the flanks at Prentice Park this Friday night. The game kicks off at 8:30pm. Tickets are still available.
